July 1976, 1980 – The Other Finley

Read below why Mike Norris appreciated the A’s Director of Public Relations Carl Finley’s support in 1976.

Oakland Tribune, Sunday, June 29, 1980

Excerpt:
“All these Oakland Finleys must be crazy like foxes.
Charlie O. has been jousting, quite successfully, with the baseball establishment for years but don’t overlook Carl Finley, the A’s director of public relations.
What Carl did when he planned and edited the A’s 1976 brochure last winter was devote 30 lines to a biography of Mike Norris, a 21-year old righthander who started this season with one major league victory. That’s 10 more lines than Carl gave to Claudell Washington, seven more than to Reggie Jackson and Vida Blue, soc more than to Joe Rudi and two more than to both Manager Chuck Tanner and Billy Williams.
Carl must have known something because Sunday Norris turned in a 6-0 three-hitter over Kansas City that had the Royals talking like he was a combination of Walter Johnson, Lefty Grove and Jim Palmer.”
